Yeah, strange. I see references to 8.410, 8.412 and 8.413, no 8.411 Tomtom just recently (within the past 24 hours) updated the US application history and added app 8.411 at www.tomtom.com/6420 Of course the changes are listed as 'minor improvements' which isn't very helpful.
8.412 was a navcore release for the European ONE/XL LIVE models that surfaced a few months ago and never seemed to be released. I suspect it was a beta tester release. The official release was navcore 8.413. See www.tomtom.com/6141 from the UK. There have also been reports that firmware update 8.411 breaks some 140/340 units. Others seem to have no problem. I haven't been able to track down the direct download link, so I can't determine if there's a bootloader upgrade included.
If there isn't a bootloader upgrade, then any changes 8.411 makes should be reversible. Thanks Tim for the link - I checked and all the 8.411 units do come with a bootloader upgrade from 5.5122 to 5.5128.
5.5128 is the bootloader for the european LIVE models, I'm not sure if its inclusion was a mistake. This means that the 8.411 changes aren't completely reversible, so it makes sense when tomtom says that 8.411 is breaking some units. So far, Tomtom appears to be willing to do warranty exchanges when this happens, but most people just opt to return them to the stores since its faster. One of my employees just bought a 340-S upon my recommendation. I gave him the advice to download the map, quickgpsfix, and mapshare updates (and to remove foreign voices to make the map fit).
But, because of this issue, I told him to uncheck the application box in the updates since it's known to damage models. Tomtom's pretty good about issuing quick software fixes when they result in RMA/shipping costs to them. I'm sure 8.411 will be pulled or replaced within 1-2 weeks.
First time poster here. I purchased a 340S this past weekend. It worked fine on the way home. When I did get home I plugged it into the computer to start HOME. The first thing it told me was a new map was available.
I didn't know better to create a back up first. I downloaded it, but could not install becasue of the size.
Now the map that was on the device has disappeared. Any suggestions on how to get it up and going? The size of the Map downloaded to my computer shows to be larger than the device can hold. 1969.6 map 1958.5 total space on device 1633.0 free space.
Sorry this is my first GPS and I am a little frustrated with myself for wrecking it the first day. I tried to fix the problem through email, but I didn't have luck. Once I finally called it was resolved. I ended up copying a file named 'loquendo' from the device to my computer. I then ran a quick format on the device and copied the loquendo folder back on to the tomtom. I fired up tomtom home and went through a few steps of loading the correct map and adding voices back on the device. I don't think you will have luck by removing unused voices.
I tried that with no luck. It was a pretty long and drawn out process for me but the GPS works again.
